Hi,
I have a question regarding gender when creating entries for the Spanish dictionary.
The gender of nouns involving people such as "friend" can be masculine (amigo) and feminine (amiga) in Spanish.
My question is what to do with these cases.
If I create the entry "amigo" and then select the "masculine" option, I'm ruling out the feminine counterpart. I can't select "common" or "variable" because the word ending changes according to its gender.
In most dictionaries, these entries include the two options separated by a dash or similar; for example, the entry for friend would be "amigo -a", indicating that it can be masculine (-o ending) and feminine (a- ending).
Do I have to create two separate entries (amigo:masculine; amiga:feminine) or just create the masculine option?
Thanks in advance! |

The UW must always be translated into a non-marked term, which is normally the case of the masculine for nouns (if you don’t know the gender, you would translate “friend” into “amigo” rather than into “amiga”). Inflections are introduced in another dictionary (the NL dictionary), where each entry is further categorized. Notice that this does not apply when the UW has gender (“queen”, for instance, must always be translated into a feminine form).
